The Music Memory Project

How do we remember through music?

Two years ago a group of Chicago musician/composers took on the challenge of creating music based on intimate memories from their lives. The resulting compositions have been stewing in an archive since then but will be on display, along with images and writings about these memories, at the Hairpin on March 23rd.

The event will include gallery viewing as well as live performances by participating artists: Ronnie Malley, Rashida Phillips, Ami Saraiya, 80 Foots (Chris Schoen, Emmy Bean, and T-Roy Martin), and Joey Spilberg.

Additional performers performing memory-inspired songs: Anna Soltys, as well as Jenny and Robin Bienemann!!!

Doors will open at 7PM for viewing/listening, followed by live performances starting at 8PM.

Original tune "Sweet Chariot" by Ami Saraiya/Anna Soltys benefits pilgrimage to US Social Forum

April 30. Chicago for the People Concert & CD Release

On a blistering winter morning Ami Saraiya and Anna Soltys, two local singer-songwriters, visited a Northwest side street corner where hundreds of immigrant workers seek employment as day laborers for contractors who arrive and negotiate from their trucks. From the experience of meeting with workers from Ecuador, Honduras, Poland, and Eastern Europe, the singers wrote the new single, Sweet Chariot, to be released April 30th. (see Chicago Sun-times Article by David Hoekstra 'That's the Sound of Working' about the project)

LIsten to the "Sweet Chariot" on music page or here

The visit and song are part of a larger cultural project of bringing together artists and musicians with community organizations striving for better conditions under the banner “Chicago for the People.” Local bands such as Judson Claiborne, Rebel Diaz, Detholz, Mucca Pazza and others donate tracks for a CD whose sales will raise funds for grassroots groups to attend the US Social Forum in Detroit this June.

“The forum for us is an opportunity to gather with others who live on the margins and place ourselves at the center. We have to stop letting others speak for us and speak for ourselves. We are in the struggle because we are the struggle, its up to us,” explains analía rodriguez who’s organizing a delegation from Little Village and Pilsen. “Through combining cultural work and organizing, we’re building a movement. We want to take the city that works and make it the city that works for everyone,” B. Loewe, Social Forum organizer, states.
